meekly Cbemawa American VOL. 11 Why the Crow is Black. (By Amos Smoker, Junior.) Many years ago, as the old Indians say, the animals that are now living were all white. The beaver, who was well known among the animals?, was a great artist in those days. Once when the sun was shining and everything seemed to be quiet, he made a call for all the animals. It took them a year to get together. After they all got together the beaver said that there must be some changes among the animals, that he must color each animal differently. The bear wanted to be of all colors, so the beaver colored him as much as he could, but he was not satisfied. Therefore the beaver said: "Shut your eyes and I shall make you the prettiest of all the animals." So the bear closed his eyes. After a little time the beaver mixed the black and poured it on the bear. Thats the reason why most of the bears are black. Then the birds came to be painted. The crow, who was vain like the bear, wanted to be colored the best. So the beaver said: "You shall be a woodcock." So he painted him as woodcocks are painted, with a little red on the head. NO. 41 The beaver made the crow get on a tree to see whether he could make the bark fly as woodcocksj do. The crow made good and the beaver said: "You can now go." "But," said the crow, "I do not want to have just a little red on me, I want to be all red, so if anyone kills me they shall become rich at once." "All right," said the beaver, -You shall be. all red." So he told him to shut his eyes. After a little while the paint wa fixed, and the beaver poured black on the crow and told him to fly far away and look at himself. The crow was sur prised to find himself black. That's the reason the crow is black to this day. LOCALS Supt. Covey, of Warm Springs reserva tion, was a visitor at Chemawa, for a few hours last Friday.
