Miss Jauna Holmes, of Portland, has
been in Chemawa for the past week or
bo as a guest of Miss Skipton.
Judging from the sensational finishes
in the recent basketball game?; they may
be expected to be productive of better
prepared preformers in the future.
David McWhirk brought to the office
several "Mcintosh Red" apples which
were beauties. He said they are the
apples that made the Bitter Root Valley,
of Montana, famous.
Mr. Bardwell arrived at the school,
Tuesday, for a visit with his eon, Clar-.
rence. Mr. Bardwell is an engineer and
of late has been in charge of the ma
chinery of a steamboat at Willapa har
bor. Why don't the basketball teams dress
alike when playing a school league
game? One boy with a black shiit,
another a green shirt, another with a
white one, gives a team the appearance
of a band of left-overs instead of this
year's crop. .......
Our board of umpires on fouls in our
basketball games is. a decided addition
to the features of the games, as it haw
a good effect on the competing teams
in eliminating a good dealof H-ngh play.
There is still room for further reform
in this line and I hope to see the members-of
the board kep a sharp lookout for

It should riot be necns-ary to' tell the
boys of the various basketball teams
when to vacate the .gyrn in order to
allow the following, team to occupy the
floor. The hours of practice are plainly
type-written, framed and hung up out
side the door of the gymnasium and
a clock has been provided, so that there
is no excuse. Be a good sport and vacate
the gymnasium when your time is up.

In all things the faculty, of winning has
always depended largely upon the spirit
of "do or die." People of experience
recognize the old saw that "Ail things
yield to unwearied pursuit." Those
things of life which are really, worth
while cannot be accomplished without
effort, and often it becomes necessar' to
make this effoft continually, not for an
houb, or a day, or a week or a "month,
but sometimes during a period of years.
With the ue of your faculties and "un
wearied pursuit" you' can attain: those
things so fondly desired, but :which to
a faint heart seem impossible.
Beyond doubt passengers on the
Southbound S. P. local Wednesday
evening were surprised at the commo
tion in evidence when the train reached '
Chemawa. The band was playing and
many employes and pupils were crowd
ed about the depot awaiting the arrival
of the train. This unusual demonstra
tion at the station was a welcome to upt.
Chalcraft, who had been east to Wash
ington, D C , in a1 tendance at thn con
feren n of Superintendents of the Indian
seryk'H of the United States, and who
was just returning Tome after an ab
sence of some week. The welcome was
an impromptu affair, but was all the
warmer on that account Wo are glad
to have Mr. Chalcraft with us again,
