FOOTBALL SOCIABLE
A very pleasant and entertaining even
ing was spent in the new gymnasium
Tuesday at the ice-cream social given for
the football benefit. An excellent pro
gram was given consisting of football
songs, yells, recitations, and music by
the Band and Mandolin Club. A read
ing, "Forecast of our Christmas Game,"
by' Albert LaChapelle, created much
applause and if it comes to pass some of
our football men will no doubt be wonders
in the Christmas game.
After the well received program all
took;partin a grand march. Although
Tuesday was the coldest day we have
witnessed this winter Mr. Mann had no
trouble in disposing of twenty-eight gal
ions of ice-cream and several large cakes.
It appeared to some of the football
players present-that n "big game" was
taking place. There was a continual
"scrimmage" around the tables and now
and then a "fumble" which made a "rag
ged" game and caused a loss of. several
"downs' at critical movments, besides
injuring the glad rags of those standing
within spattering distance. Trick plays
were used frequently by the girls for good
gains. Mr. Mann and his boys used
"fake plays" (half dishes) to' great ad
vantage. Assistant Supt. Campbell tried
the foward pass to Pickering Chalcraft,
hut Pickering failed to hold th&dish and
was penalized for several "yards" of
cleaning aud pressing by Mr., Enrightj
the referee and tailor. The "safetys"
in different corners of the room did ex
cellent work in "holding down" their
places. There was a great deal of "on
side kicking" going on by those who
couldn't get through the scrimmage line
to leach the ice-cream "goal" as soon as
they desired. Mr. Cooper had a gi ea4
deal of trouble as head "linesman."
Mr. Campbell was heard to make this
announcement a few minutes before the
time was up: :l23 gallons down and 5 to
go."
Mr. Bowen handled the gate" receipts
and Mr. Smith sold tickets to those who
desired them. :
It was impossible to decide who were
"the stars of the game" but several proved
themselves angels. The score wTas 28 gal
lons tothe gate ivceipt in favor of the
football fund. Coach H mining re
mained on the side line taking pointers,
. Philip Sorahan was out from Salem
Tuesday evening.
Misses Nora and Hattie Mann came
out from Salem Tuesday to attend the
ice-cream social.
Mr. Mann has purchased a camera for
taking pictures on post cards. He intends
to start a pot card hall in order to keep
his daughters supplied with post cards.
