THE C HEM AAV A AMERICAN
MR. MO RAN'S LECTURE.
Mr. Moran, instructor in the engineer
ing department, delivered an interesting
address Monday evening. He gave the
history of the boiler, beginning with the
invention of the first cast iron make and
explaining the manufacture of the differ
ent kinds up to the modern type. He
also gave a brief history of the steam
engine and told how it is operated and
kept in running order.
He said when the power house is com
pleted a class room will be established,
which will give the student a greater
opportunity to study and learn steam
and electrical engineering. He showed
the rapid progress four of his students
had made in their studies1 by asking
them to speak on different subjects.
Levi Sortor was the first speaker to
the platform. His subject was "The
operation of the Chemawa plant. ' He
told in a remarkably clear manner how
the school plant was operated and how
each student worked his way from the
wood-pile up to the running of the en
gines and dynamos the highest place in
the department. He pointed out the
difficult and easy work connected with
each advancement proving that he had
served his time at each step and had
gained a knowledge of that particular
work before going on to the next part.
Philip Moss was the next speaker.
He spoke on the subject of electricity.
He told of the operation and care of
the electric plant and the important
part it takes in the welfare of the in
stitution. He explained how the dif
ferent buildings were furnished with
light and the laundry, wood saw and
different shops with power and how all
this wus done through wires connected
witli the dynamos and switchboard.
Manuel Swanson was next called on
to tell what he had learned about the
pump. A small pump was used on the
platform and he pointed out and named
the different parts, their uses and con
struction. He spoke of the pumps in the power
plant, telling how much water it took
to supply the grounds and the wonder
ful duty the pump has to perform every
twenty-four hours. He handled his
subject like a veteran, which shows that
he has thoroughly mastered the study.
Edward Ainsworth next spoke on
wiring. He pointed out and explained
from drawings, which he had- made on
the black board, the resistance offered to
the flow of water through a long crooked
pipe; the discharge in gallons per min
ute corresponding to amperes. The
system for distributing electricity at
constant pressure, and the typical con
stant potential system. He spoke of
the action of electricity and the different
laws which govern it. ,
EX-SUPERINTENDENT POTTER
The many friends of Ex-Superintendent
Potter will be pleased to know
that he was elected County Superintend
ent of Twin Falls County, Idaho, at
the recent election by a substantial
majority. Mr. Potter, since resigning
from Chemawa, has been Superintendent
of city school at Twin Falls and during
the first year of his incumbency built a
$80,000 school building for this pro
gressive city of the ' Northwest. ,
This morning the Chemawa team left
for Pacific University, accompanied by a
trainload of rooters in a special car 'over
the Oregon Electric for Forest Grove.
Just what the result of this game will be
it is hard to predict, but our boys have
put in a good week's practice under Coach
Flemming and if nard work counts for
anything they should make a good
showing.
