IMPROVEMENTS ASSURED.
Money is now available to remodel
and repair the Small Girls' Home. The
building will be modernized and im
proved inside and out.
Estimates are now being prepared to
remodel the old hospital building into a
domestic science hall, which, when
completed, will give Chemawa an up-to-date
domestic department.
W. D. Lowell of Minneapolis has re
ceived the contract for the addition to
the power house, etc. The improve
ment will consist of a brick smokestack
80 feet high, a 100-horse power boiler,
and an addition to the pow,er house 20x
60, in addition to putting the plant in
first-class condition.
Brevities
Chemawa's roses are again coming in
full bloom.
Ella Brewer acted as matron for the
small boys while Mrs. Newcomb was in
Salem on Monday.
The dining room and laundry girls
enjoyed a picnic and general good time
on the lawn Monday evening.
A card received at the office a couple
of days ago from Mr. Bowen informed
us that he was then in Portland, but did
not state anything regarding his plans
for the remainder of his vacation. He
had been over to Newport previous to
dropping us a card.
Mr. Bardwell, father of Clarence Bard
well, arrived here Tuesday from his home
on the Sound. He is immensely pleased
with the school and thinks it of 'the ut
most value and importance in many
ways. Mr. Bardwell is a mechanical en
gineer and of late has been in charge of
the engines on a steamer plying on the
Skagit river.
Letters have been received by us from
both Gordon Hobucket and Webster
Hudson, who were members of the
American staff up to the time of their
graduation two weeks ago. ,They are
now up at their homes on the So.und,
Gordon at La Push, and Webster at
Mora, Wash. We were glad to hear
from the boys and are pleased to extend
their kind remembrances to many Che
mawa friends.
A delightful al fresco party on the
veranda of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Cooper
Monday evening, August 10, 1908, in
honor of Mr. Henry Dillstrom's 21st
birthday, was the occasion of much mer
riment and enjoyment for his friends.
Games were played until a late hour,
when the guests were summoned to par
take of dainty refreshments served by
the host and hostess. Those present
were: Misses May Evans, Belle Dill
strom, Iva Cox, Bertha Cooper, Florence
Hutchinson, Mrs. A. Cooper, Messrs.
Henry, Elmer, Arthur Dillstrom, Clar
ence Cooper.
