Commencement
A Great Success
Twelve Graduates Acquit T hem
selves with Credit
The following excellent general write
up of our commencement exercises is
from the S&lem Statesman:
School work for the students at the
Chemawa Indian school officially closed
last evening, after the completion of one
of the most unique and enjoyable Com
mencement programs that the people of
Salem have ever had the pleasure of
attending.
From the opening of the exercises
Tuesday morning, when the large crowd,
of visitors who had gathered at' the
school were given an opportunity to in
spect the industrial departments of the
institution, untilthe close of the beau
tiful operetta last evening, there was not
a feature of the program that was
not of the highest order, and the large
crowd of Salem people who attended the
exercise?, especially those unfamiliar
with the work carried on at the school,
returned to Salem with feelings of wonder
and surprise, to learn of the remarkable
work that is being done there. v
The exercises of yesterday opened at
9 o'clock a. m. with a field meet between
two selected teams called the Amateurs
and the Novices. The meet was closely
contested resulting in a final score of 55
to 41 in favor of the Amateurs.
At 2' o'clock in the afternoon, a base
ball game was played between the sen
iors and the faculty. The game was an
interesting, one being 'closely contested
up to the last inning when, the seniors
won by t he score () to 5.
In the evening a dress parade dull was
given by the school battalion. Although
the. battalion is made iip of students
ranging all the way from boys uf 10
years to grown up men, the dres parade
which lasted for several hours, was car
ried out in the most commendable man
rrer, the officers showing a perfect know
ledge of military tactics, and the boys
following out the orders with a prompt
ness and precision that betoken a zeal
and earnestness that was most commend
able There is little doubt that one
would have to look a long While among
the colleges and academies of the coun
try to find a student body compo.-ed
