Commissioner Leupp is now at Uma
tilla Agency.
Mrs. Chalcraft and Alice left for the
Chautauqua on the three o'clock train
Tuesday, the 7th.
Secretary Garfield made a trip up from
San Francisco to Portland, from whence
he will go to Umatilla Agency and
thence on to Idaho.
Mr. Campbell and his daugher, Miss
Irene, can be seen nearly every evening
on the tennis court. Honors are very
evenly divided between them.
Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Cooper charming
ly entertained the class of '08 and their
friends at their ummer home adjoining
the school July 4th. All spent a delight
ful time swinging on the swings, playing
games, etc. A delicious luncheon was
served under the cherry trees on the
campus to which ample justice was done.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Swaim,
Mrs. A. Cooper, Misses Mabel Swaim,
Florence Hutchinson, Katie Brewer,
Louise Murray, Belle Dillstrom, Tillie
Souvigner, Messrs. Henry Dillstrom, Geo.
Swaim. and Clarence Cooper.
Superintendent Thompson of the
Southeastern Alaska School paid Che
mawa a visit Thursday., He was much
pleased with the good work carried on
at Chemiwa and was. agreeably sur
prised at the large school and force of
employes necessary to carry on the
education of the pupils. This was
Superintendent Thompson's first visit to
a large non-resei vation Indian School
and his tour of inspection of the academic
and industrial shops will give a broader
scope of the work "Uncle Sam" is doing
towards the uplifting and educating of
the youthful charges consigned to his
care.
A letter from Mr. and Mrs. Harry L.
Beard, who are spending their honey
moon at the residence of the groom's
parents on Klamath Lake, glowingly
described the beauties of that section.
Mr. Beard was for several years employ
ed at Chemawa and took an active in
terest in the band. His wife, formerly
Miss Kate Adams, of the class of '08 of
Oregon Agricultural College, is a highly
accomplished young woman. Mr. and
Mrs. Beard will be at home to their
many friends at Corvallis after Sept
1 st. The American and many Chema
wa friends wish them much happiness.
Brevities
Mr. E. A. Smith is manager for the
Chicago Derby's baseball team.
In yesterday's game Graham was
touched up for only three hits.
Mr. Westley took the First Grade boys
out to work on the garden last Thurs
day. The plumbers are laying water-pipes
to the gymnasium and to the baseball
ground.
Thomas Fleury and Walter McGib
bon were fixing a motor in the engineer
ing department this morning.
Everyone is invited to witness a
game between the undefeated Amateurs
and the Rig Zs this evening. Game
called at 6:15.
When Ernest Brewer slips a baseball
suit on he looks like McCredie. Next
year he will be able to .play with , the
Tacoma Tigers.
