Once a long time ago, the Indians liv

salmon. When Summer was coming they
went down to the mouth of the river.
They used to have houses at the mouth

Some people lived on James Island , at
that time. They used to fish for smelt.
They did not use strings to make nets

I am going to write you a few lines of
an old story of what the Indians were
doing a long time ago. Long time ago
the Indians lived on James Island. They
used to fish on the other-side of that Is
land. At that time the Makah Indians
came to have a war against the Quileute
tribes. In the morning the Quileute In
dians went fishing and the Makah Indi
ans hid themselves in some place on the
south side of James Island and when the
Indians were fishing the Makahs went
after them to have a war. Some of the
Quileute Indians escap ed. When the war
was over the Makah Indians went back
toNeah Bay. Thompson Black. s
A very, very long time ago, nobody
can tell how long ago, when the Quileute
Indians were at James Island they used
to hunt elk with their bows and arrows;
some of them used spears. My father
says he used a rifle when he hunted elk
or deer.
Some, of the old Indians used to be at
the river fishing with their fishing traps.
My father used to have one. Mr. Old
Man Washington got one every year.
He used to catch many hundred fish
with this trap.
Mr. Old Man Mason said that the In
dians of long ago used to have two
or three wives. Mr. Mason was a great
whale hunter when he was a young man.
I am only a boy so I can not tell
many things about the Indians of many
centuries ago. Jim Ward.
When I was a little girl three; years
old I heard many Indian stories but I
can not tell so many old stories now.
Once I heard that the Indians used to
have, four or five wives.
They also used to have a war with the
Puget Sound Indians.
The Indians lived on James Island a
long, long time ago. Nobody can tell
what day and year it was when they
lived there. Well, I bid you good-bye.
