Some boys take delight: in picking
wild flowers.
Busy! Busy!! Busy!!! Something doing
all the time.
The new gymnasium has received its
first coat of paint.
Quite a number of our people went
down to Portland to see the Rose Carni
val. Thos. McCully was acting disciplin
arian when Mr. Larsen went to Portland
last week.
Joe Charles returned to school on
Tuesday morning. We are glad to have
him back again.
Quite number of boxes of strawberries
were shipped away from the vicinity of
Chemawa this week.
The sixth grade girls visited the print
ing office Monday after school and some
of the girls were shown type lice.
A postal card was received from John
Smith, Neah Bay, Washington, in which
he stated that he is getting along nicely.
The Juniors were sorry to have their
two classmates, Fred and Clarence Lewis,
leave them. They went home for cheir
vacation.
Dr. Pierce was seen in Portland by
those who went. down to the Carnival
and sends his regards to all his Chema
wa friends.
The Chemawa Y. M: C. A. delegates
will leave here June 12th for Long
Beach, Wn., for the Pacific Northwest
Y. M. C. A. Conference.
Joe Charles arrived Tuesday morning,
on the overland, from California, after
having a long vacation. His friends
were all glad to see him.
The band boys are now directed by
Mr. Stoudenmeyer, who comes out from
Salem during the week days and gives
them instructions from 2. p. m. to 4p.m.
A small cup is to be given to the
winning team of the Rose Avenue base
ball league. The teams are named as
follows: Unions, Black Cats, Tigers and
Tyees.
Mrs. Campbell, Miss Irene Campbell,
Miss Noble, Miss Roy er, Miss Leudke
and Miss Earlougher went to Portland
to hear the Damrosch orchestra and
Nordica. They were delighted with
the music.
Mrs. Campbell, principal teacher, en
tertained the Seniors and their friends,
at her own cottage, last Thursday night.
It was an interesting affair and the ac
count of it will be given in next week's
American.
Today photographs of different parts
of the grounds and students were taken.
The interior view of various departments
will be taken later. After this we will
have plenty of slides for our stereopti
con, of different views of Chemawa and
its students.
Athletics
Little Joe Bittles can be seen with his
white initialed sweater playing baseball
every evening.
Haynes Bateman is practicing catching
ball. Simon Matthews is his "twirler,'
who is commonly known as Chop Suey.
Joe Charles registered as catcher for
the second baseball team the first thing
after he arrived. Manager Eugene Wil
liams was lucky enough to come around
before the others.
