The resolutions drawn up and ratified
in the conference are as follows:
Resolved, That the thanks of all present
are hereby tendered to Frank A. Miller for
calling this conference into being and for the
generously munificent hospitality he has
extended to us.
Resolved, That the home is the unit and
the foundation of American life and should
be taken as the corner-stone . of all educa
tion. Any plans for the education of In
dians should include parents as well as
children.
Resolved, That we ask that a special
prosecuting attorney be detailed to assist in
more active enforeemeent of the liquor laws
relating to the Indians and other laws lor
the;r protecion.
Resolved t That we tender the thanks of
this conference to Senator Frank P. Flint mid
all of the 'California delegation at Washing
ton for their imtiritig and successful efforts
iii Congress on behalf of tha California In
dian. Resolved , That this conference hereby
records its high appreciation of the extra
ordinary skill, thoroughness, and efficiency
with which C. K Kelsey. special agent of the
California Indians, has discharged and is
discharging the duties of his most difficult
mission.
Resolved i That we pledge ourselves, in
dividually 5r nd collectively, to assist to the
best of our ability in the upholding and the
continuance of this work until to every land
less Indian in California shall be secured the
land upon which he can maintain a home
and until public sentiment shall demand
full justice for all California Indians.
A special resolution was authorized
in favor of Superintendent Hall for his
untiring efforts in making the confer
ence a success.
Hlach session of the Indian conference
was well attended by our students, who
manifested a deep interest and seemed to
get an uplift in its proceedings. Sher

We were all glad to see Fred Bain re
turn to school last Saturday.
Mr. Westley says he will pick the first
mess of strawberries on June 5th. Good!
Leonard and Mary McDaniels returned
to school from California last Tuesday.
The little boys enjoy very much the
evening readings of Mrs. Newcomb.
Their comments and enthusiasm when
the 'American" is read to them are
unique as well as a reaching out for
knowledge
Mr. Newcomb say that Joe Bittles
makes an excellent button-hole. Joe
is a tiny mite who is the pride of the
tailor shop and a visit to the Industrial
Department will find Joe busily at
work wielding the needle as he sits cross
legged on the table.
LeRoy Gesner, violin virtuoso of Salem,
will give a pupils' violin recital June 1st,
and he extends a cordial invitation to
the people of Chemawa to be in attend
ance. It is absolutely free, no admission
being charged. Further particulars will
be given in the next issue of the Ameri
can. The appronriati n bill for our school
the coming year reads as follows: uFor
support and education of six' hundred
Indian pupils at the Indian School,
Salem, Oregon, and for pay of Superin
tendent, One Hundred and Two Thous
and, Two Hundred Dollars; for general
repairs and improvements, Nine Thous
and Dollars. In all. One Hundred
Eleven Thousand, Two Hundred Dollars.'
