VALUE OF A TM LErJ ICV
There are many people who incline
toward the opinion that . athletics are
ruinous to a student body. Much de
pends upon the extent of indulgence as.
to whether or not the results . are bene--'
ficiaJ. Like everything else in life,
athletics carried to excess will prove
detrimental to the general welfare of a
student bodr.
As athletics are carried on at Ghema
wa they are productive of the greatest
good. Mind and body act in sympathy
-tins has long been a recognized fact. To
excel in athletics it is necessary for the
athlete to keep himself in the best possible
physical condition. A good, strong,
clean, healthy body affects the mind.
Such a physical condition demands, and
produces, a mind of vigor, keenness and
cleanliness in keeping with the state of
the body.
Here in Chemawa there is continuous
evidence of these facts. Such a meet as
was held one evening recently would con
vince any unprejudiced person of the
truth of our assertion. The training for
the great fifty-mile race last Saturday
brings out the best in our boys and in
spires all with a desire for a state of per
fect physical condition.
Brevities
The band concerts on Sunday after
noons are very much enjoyed.
The flower gardens around the school
building are looking very nice.
We are getting ready some sample
lesson in our school room.
This issue of the American might prop
erly be designated Chemawa's annual
race issue.
We had a real weird Indian looking
porch bench on the teachers' club porch,
but even it has become civilized and
donned a sober suit of green.
Mr. and Mrs Smith took eleven of .the
girls oat Walking Monday evening. We
all enjoyed ourselves very, much, and
we hope that they will take us out again
in the near future. H. H.
We have a Normal department now
which we hope to make very succesful.
The... teachers this month are Louise
Murray, Belle Dillstrom, Tilly Souvenir
Katie Brewer, Calvin Darnell, Loulin
Brewer, Margaret Lowry and Vernie
Cliffe.
One hundred Indian tents are now
erected on the camping ground at the
Presbyterian Indian mission on Tutuilla,
six iniies southeast of Pendleton, Ore.,
where a great Indian revival is being
held by the Umatilla?. Parties of In
dians from the Yakima, Nez Perce, Flat
head, Blackfoot, Warm Spring and other
tribes are arriving and the attendance
will reach 1,000, it is believed. Ten Ner
Perce ministers will preach to the assem
bled tribes and a ten-days'' meeting will
be held. A. G.
