12 THE CHEMA
the big auto following the race and drop
ped just in time to make the respective
changes.
At the Chemawa School the directors
extended hospitality to the two associa
tion men at the Salem end and put them .
under the same training regime as were
their own men. On the morning of the
race the Indians supplied the Y. M. C. A .
men, as well as their own, with a sched
ule of instructions, and altogether pro v
ed how superior was their organization.
Many of the Y, M. C. A. men had
great difficulty in reaching their posi
tions by car and on foot, and it was
only by the courtesy of Henry Hewitt
with a 2:40 trotter, and buggy that Lau,
the Oswego relay, was able to get to his
post at all. Lack of interest taken by
the ruling powers of the association and
no contributions in the matter of funds ;
is what the runners charge the associa
tion officials with. Physical Director
Grilley is not held at fault. Oregonian.

PA AMERICAN
Notes of the Race
We publish the articles as appearing
in the Portland Journal and the Oregon
ian which gave, very good accounts of
the race, but our friends the enemy have
one or two misconceptions, especially one
which states that our men were over
their course twenty times. While the
facts are, that this year Walter Haight
ran over his course once; Lewis Sander
son'' and Sam John were driven over their
course once; William Watkins and Geo.
Williams had never seen the laps they
were to run on. The other members of
the team had not seen their course since
they ran on the same last May,
The relay runners were cared for at
the various, stations as follows: Station'
No, 2, by Joseph Dillstrom; Station No,
3, by Mrs. Smith; Station No. 4, by
Mr. Ed. Smith; Station No. 5, by Frank
Booth; Station No. 6, by Martin Samp
son; Station No. 7, by Eugene Williams;
Station No, 8, by Thomas McOully;
Station No. 9, by Ernest Brewer; Sta
tion No, 10, by Mr. Teabo.
That the Chemawa Relay Team had
no cigarette smokers or other smokers
except Amos Smoker in its ranks is a
good object lesson for those who use the
weed.
Tomorrow we hold a meet under the
auspices of the P. N, A. on the State
Fair Ground's track, in order to get an
official record for the 5- mile run. This
meet has been authorized and we have
invited all the Clubs and Colleges of the
Northwest who are in the P, N, A. to
participate in the event
