Notes of the Race
Last year Walter Haight ran the 5
mile and a half on ther first lap in 28
minutes 53 seconds, which would make
it 26 minutes 15 seconds for the five
miles. This year some of the watches
made it 27 minutes: This has been
questioned, but as there was a strong
wind; at , his back he no doubt made, the
time in question. ,
Encouraging reports were received as
the race progressed. At the end of the
first lap Haight lead his competitor by 3
minutes, 45 seconds. At the end of the
second lap Sanderson'5 was A minutes
ahead. Michel Wilson placed us 6 min
utes to the good. The next reports show
ed George Williams; on the sixth lap as
14 minutes ahead, . while Frank Dan
ended his course 17 minutes ahead.
Frank ran against Backus, the star run
ner of the Y. M. C. A. This was the
last ' report until Amos, Smoker placed
the precious missive in the, hands of
Mayor Lane, 24 minutes and 18 seconds
ahead of Hessemer of the Y. M. O A.
Chemawa had her troubles in pull
ing off the relay, but she surmounted'
tnem. They came, thick and fac on the
morning of the race. First, all tele
phone connection was cut put; second,
it was ai ranged for Reuben Saunders to
follow the Chemawa runners on his
motor cycle. The motor ' cycle broke
down, but he took the electric car and
the bicycle and joined the race at Wood
burn, going the last seven laps with' the .
runners. Mr; Campbell' was to .follow;
th e ra ce in a n an torn o hi 1 e and;, t a ke ? t ' i v
time. 1 he automobile only 'got 2 12
miles on the way when it had to Ix
abandoned. . He took the jelectric car
into Portland... Mr. Chaloraft : took the
S.' P. to Oregon City, secured . an auto
mobile and followed the winners for the
last four courses.
