Tuesday the band at Chemawa cele
brated its 12th birthday most fittingly
by giving a, concert. The band is large
enough in numbers to attempt, works of
a high order, but numbers is not all that
is necessary. Talent is not the only
thing either. No matter how many
there are of you, boys, nor how talented
you may be, there is a certain amount of
"drudgery" you must undergo to perfect
yourselves in music or in anything else.
N musician is born with the ability to
orperly execute all sorts of passage or
to master the problem of "tone quality."
The.e are necessary in esemble work
and if they are neglected or wholly ig
nored the entire organization must suf
fer. The correction these "too-common"
faults lies -in individual practice on
scales and exercises. Learn to finger
and blow the scale correctly in any
given key and you Will have accom
plished much. Let us hear some of the
boys. playing a scale now and then and
we shall look to the future with more
confidence. The opportunity is here, it is

SOCIETIES
RELIANCE
The Reliance Literary Society met in
room No. 8. The room was called to
order and roll, was called; Old and
new business was transacted. A few of
the members made very interesting
speeches. The color for the society was
selected, which was white and black.
Among other business considered- was
the matter of an entertainment. The
chief feature, of the evening was a speech
by Simon Mathews. Two more members
were added to the roll, and they-' were
welcome. The program was read after
which we 'adjourned.
NON PAREIL
The Nonpareil Literary Society met in
their usual place of meeting. As it was
the time for the election of new officers
there was no regular program arranged.
Old and new business was transacted.
The officers elected were as follows:
President, A ddie Cameron; Vice-President,
Fred Lewis; Secretary, Calvin
Darnell; Treasurer. Eugene Williams;
Serjeant-at-Arms, Levi Sortor; Reporter,
John McCush, After the election of
officers preparations were made for an
entertainment before the society dis
bands. Vernis Cliff e was admitted to
the society and then we adjourned.
