EXCELSIOR
On account of the Christmas holidays
the Excelsior Literary Society has not
met for some time. The meeting last
Thursday was very enthusiastic ' from
beginning to end. It seemed that vaca
tion had done the members a lot of good;
as if they had gathered and stored
enough material for the occasion. The
speeches made by the newly-elected
officers were very encouraging. The
question -box afforded the society much
pleasure. Altho' it made many of the
members blush, the enjoyment derived
from it was worth remembering. At
just about the close of this interesting
meeting the acceptance from the Non
pareil, of a challenge for a series of three
public debates came. . It was applauded
and cheered, showing how eager the
members are to debate with the other
K society. As the first meeting of the New
Year has prdven such a success , they
have resolved to make the rest of the
gatherings just as profitable and lively.
CHALLENGE
Chemawa, Ore.,
Jan. 16. 1908.
Editor American: We, the tailor
boys, hereby challenge any shop team,
to a game of basket ball, to be played on
any open date at the gymnasium, sub
ject to the approval of the superintend
ent. Michel Wilson,
Captain Tailors' B. B. Team.
I am glad that I came to Chemawa to
school for what little I have learned is
more than I would have learned at home
in three years or more.
Walter McGibbon is the best fireman
we ever had on the morning shift. We
all hope he will stay with his job be
cause he is a first-class fireman.
The engineers are all glad that they
have a new engine to run the fan so they
will have steam all over the grounds,
especialy at McBride Hall. You all
know the rule, "no steam, no social."
