A press dispatch from Ashland, Wis.,
says: The Indians at La Point reservation
southeast of Ashland are probably
affected most of any of the tribes of the
United States by the recent decision of
the United States supreme court regard
ing the liquor traffic. The decision is .
that whosoever take liquor upon
these lands set aside as a
reservation for Indians, no matter
whether the land is now an allotted
portion and in the owners name or not
is liable to punishment under federal
laws. If the person arrested for taking
liquor on the reservation has received
his allotment it does not protect him
from punishment. The case on which
this decision was made had as the
defendant William Contoure, an Indian
irom the La Point reservation, who was
arrested Feb. 8, 1906, on the charge of
having intoxicating liquor on his lands
which were in the reservation limits but
on which he received his patent. His
defense was that the land svas therefore
not reservation country and that the
federal laws debarred him from punish
ment. Weekly Review.

It is pleasing to note the enthusiasm
and good school spirit on the part of the
ranch boys and girls. This was espe
cially displayed in their rousing yells as
they drove in from the ranch last week
to attend the several social affairs at the
school. Sherman Bulletin.
In spite of the fact that the mumps
practically cancelled the original pro
gram for Xmas eve the entertainment
was good and reflected credit upon those
who could rise to an urgent situation.
The numbers by the band and mandolin
club were especially enjoyed, as was al
so the little song by the third grade pu
pils. The exercise, "Santa Claus and
Jack Frost," received a hearty applause
both for its effectiveness and originality.
