mou'h of the Smit'h River. California is
deplorable. Years ago an agreement was
martc between the whites and the Indians
fo' the reil men to retain the island in
the mouth of the river. We understand
this landwas subsequentlydeeded to them
by the geni ralGovernnientjhut since their
allotment sonic one (white man) has
claimed land us swanp land for (state
land) and the Indians have been dis
possessed of their homes. They were
alloted to remain as "squatters." The
heavy rains in that part of the country
w.ishe I their houses away, so that today
they are homeless. Some of them had
very comfortable homes. The county
authorities of Del Norte Co., Calif., have
taken up the matter with the Indian
- office asking for relief for the people.
