this new law by which the Indian may
be kept in tutelage under Government
control during the trust patent period
gives the Government an opportunity to
try to protect the Indian from the liquor
dealer.
While all this places more authority
in the Interior Department it seems ev
ident that that department is the only
agency through which the rights of in
dividuals may be secured against preying
.real estate agents and other scheming
whites. Secretary Hitchcock recently
made a declaration before a special Sen
ate committee which was investigating
the property rights of certain tribes, in
which he showed that the unprotected
Indians stood no chance in contending
with the cunning instincts of white
"grafters."
That, the Indian is to be better pro
tected in his rights than heretofore seems
surely an occasion for favorable comment
while the argument that he will thus be
kept the longer in leading strings may
be met by a reminder that the period of
tutelage ma)r be shortened in the case of
Indians capable of taking care of them

Mr. Mann witii his blacksmith force
are busy repairing the roofs of the build
ings and replacing wornout gutters.
Frank Sorahan and John Peazzon
have put up a new blacksmith forge in
place of the old one, and are doing neat
work.

Mrs. Campbell took the pupils of the
sixth and seventh grades, to town to
see the Legislature on Thursday, and all
had a very enjoyable time. A. M.
The Fifth Grade spent Tuesday in Sa
lem. They attended the Legislature.
The Seventh and Sixth Grade girls,
are working in the Domestic Science,
class this week. K. H.
The Daisy Club gave a very nice play
