We see by our exchanges that they
have "Ice and snow at Carlisle", "Skat
ing" at Flandreau, "Gloomy weather"
at Haskell, while we have roses at Che
mawa. . .
Christmas next! Are we ready to
have a Merry Christmas? The Chema
wa American wishes all its readers a
Merry Christmas and a Happy. New
Year.
Chemawa has added 125 acres to its
cultivated land by leasing the farm of
Mr. William Claggett, which lies about
I of a mile to the West of the school.
This will supply a long needed want
and give the school forage for its stock,
that has long been needed. .
Geo. Shattuck, an ex-Chemawan is
now the Chief Engineer on the steamer
E. A. Harnell, one of the largest and
most powerful tug-boats on the Pacific
Ocean. He is now earning $130 per
month. George won his promotion by hard
work and study and his Chemawa friends
congratulate him upon his carrying out
the Chemawa idea..
In order to give the printer boys a lit
tle vacation and at the same time get up
with some of the job Avork which is hang
ing over through , the Holidays, there
will be no American issued during
Christmas week, so that the next num
ber will be issued in the first week of
1907. The American takes this occas
ion to wish you all a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.
Chemawa is preparing to have a good
week for .the pupils during the Christ
mas Holidays. Christmas festivities
will commence on Christmas Eve when
Santa Clause will visit the school and
the presents will be distributed from the
tree in the school chapel. . Then on
Christmas morning Father Datin will
hold mass for the Catholic pupils and
the School will have a short responsive
service at 10:30. Then at 12:30 Christ
mas dinner will be given the pupils.

At 3:30 in the afternoon lhe Hiawa
thas and the Excelsiors will play a game
for the championship of the school. As
all of the first team of players will par
ticipate in this school game and as we
have a hard game to play with the
Dalles Athletic Association on New
Year's Day the officials have cautioned
the boys that penalties will be given for
every little offense against the rule?.
This may hold down some undue enthu
siasm' which is at fever- heat. On Wed
nesday evening the Christmas entertain
ment will be held in the school ohajul
and on Thursday there will a Christmas
Sociable in the Gymnasium. Then on
Friday evening the strong basketball
from from the Weston Normal School
will play Chemawa's first team and on
Saturday evening the team from Oak
Grove will play Chemawa's second team.
All in all, the Chemawa pupils will have
a full. Christmas week.
