Minst el At Chemawa
The'jNesika, a literary and debating
club, organized by and composed of
about twenty students of the Chemawa
Ipdian ' Training School, sprung a gen-m
uine surprise at that Institution on
Thursday evening in the way of a min
strel show, and the effort of the club
members was highly complimented
both by their fellow students and the
officers of the school. It is. the custom
of the Nesika Club to give entertain
ments at regular intervals, but the pro
duction on Thursday evening surpassed
all former off rH The minstrel show
had boon secretly arranged by the club
and proved a rare treat to the audi
ence. When the curtain went up the club
members were seated about the stage,
as') many students engaged in social
intercourse. . Finally one of them sug
gested that they give a "little enter
tain wont" for their own amusement, to
which the others at once agreed. They
all stepped behind the scenes and when
they returned to the stage it was as a
'full-Hedged'' minstrel, to the great
surprise of the audience.
The program which followed consist
ing of songs, recitations, jokes etc. and
brought forth hearty applaiise,from the
Bchool children ami officers. The stage
settings had been artistically arranged
and the entire rendition of the "improni'
tu" play, all of which was original,
showed marked ability on the part of
the club members.
Before the final drop of the curtain
the players gathered upon the stage and
sang the "The Star Spangled Banner,"
while the elurs and stripes slowly floated
from behind the seem s. The audience
arose to its feet and joined in the song
which marked the close of an evenings
entertainment, long to be remembered at
the Chemawa school. Statesman. '
Nesika Club Entertainment
The boys' entertainment given in the
chapel on Thursday night was excellent.
Mr. Larsen who had charge of it is to be
congratulated. The program is given be
low. All acquitted them most admirably.
The stage setting was one of the best
ever seen at Chemawa. Peter Seltice
and Eugene 'Williams were the "end
men" and kept the'audiense in a roar
all evening. The singing of the "Star
Spangled Banner" as a final with the flag
being drawn up the aisle during the
singing. It made a fine ending.
