THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN. 5 AT IT AGAIN. N. Chilocco and Carlisle, our two big brothers, are "scrapping." It is no ex hibition boxing match either. Gloves were thrown aside in the first round and now it is for blood. Here, big boys, you stop that or all v the rest of your brother schools will C get after both of you, red hot. Don't be jealous of each other. There U lots of room in this .big country for a dozen Carlisles and Chiloccos. So be good now, make up, and use all your ammunition in the future in civilizing and educating the Indian, in your own preferred way, and do not waste it "hitting" each other, by unkind criticism and harmful com - inent. CHOOSING BOYS. Ceorge Sexton, who has charge of two hundred boys at Wanamaker's, loves to talk about boys. "Boys are not a necessary evil at this establish ment," he said, "they are the material out of which men are to be made." "How do you choose your cash boys, Mr. Sexton? I asked. "My first question is; 'Where is the boy?' You see, it all depends upon the boy himself. You can judge the boy better from his appearance, his man ner, his dress, and the way he comes into an office, than from any descrip tion of him. Character shows forth in little things you can't-hide. I take boys by what you might call first im pressions. I have sized a boy up be fore he asked me for a place. The re- moval or non-removal of the hat on entering the office, the respectful and self-respecting way in which a boy addressed me, the way in which he meets my look and questions, all give me an idea of his bringing up and the "stuff" that is in him.. As to appear ance, I look at once for these things: polished shoes, clean clothes, and clean face, hands and finger nails. Good clothes are not requisites; a boy's clothes may be ragged, his shoes have holes in them, yet his appearance may still give evidence of a desire to be neat. I will not employ a cigar ette smoker, if I know it. , As for re ference a boy's teacher is the best re ference he can have. The recommen dation which a good boy in our em ploy gives a boy applying for a posi tion always receives marked consider ation. Good cash boys don't stay cash boys long. Some boys who came here as cash boys are now junior salesmen. Others have good positions throughout the house. Selected. AN INTERESTING LECTURE. On Monday night Inspector Chubbock delivered a most interest ing lecture on dairying to the faculty and student body. He showed by actual experiment how the per cent of butter fat is ascertained by using the Babcock test. The milk from several of the school cows was tested and the amount of butter fat was determined from each cow for a period of five days milking. Then the pupils figured out how much butter could be produced in a year, and the value of the same in dollars and cents. It was a most practical as well as scientific discourse and pupils and employes were deeply interested. Several of the prominent farmers and
