A Creditable Entertainment. An excellent monthly entertainment was given by the pupils of the 7th and -8th grades on Monday evening. The "Scien- tificDistrict School" was the play and Mrs. (,'lmitier and Miss French have reason to he proud of the very creditable way in which it was presented. Miss Bowman had pome of her little girls assist as the children who lived in the shoe, and they ' were very running. Jesse Symington made nu ideal conntry school ma'am and; the had reason to be proud of her invention. -The school directors represented by Wm. Arqmtte, Haynes DeWitt and William P.rannan made a big. hit. But whoever would have thought that Johnny Stacey would make such a naughty school-boy? All who took pait did well and Superintend ent Potter expressed his , gratification at t lis success of the entertainment. Mess Meeting. The quarterly mess meeting was held, by the members of the mets, iu the dining hall of the employes building last Monday even iugfor the purple of electing a." manager and trinsac.ing other business that might c):ne before the meeting, Mr. Hilb acting as chairman The following officers were ihe unanimous choice of those present, aDd will undoute lly receive the hearty ap proval of the entire mess: Mr. Cooper, general manager for three months; Mrs. Theisz assistant manager for the month of April; Miss Hultman, for May, and Miss Patrick for June. Locals. The six girls who came last week all . seem to like it here very well. Disciplinarian Davis is expecting his wife and family from Arizona in the near future. Mr, and Mrs. Becker spent Saturday night in Salem, and iucidently attended the theatre that evening. W. R. Winaus, State Misionary of American Sunday School Union, of Salem, paid Chemawa a pleasant visit today. Mrs. McCalia,of Portland gave a g od size class of Chemawa people a lesson in depostmeut and dancing on Wednesday evening. Mr. Beard, of Salem has accepted the position of night watch at the school. He arrived and reported for duty on Thursday, ' ' . The Devvey-Estella Reel debate at the last meeting is highly spoken of. The en tire program was very entertaining from beginning to end. The members of the blacksmith shop wih to announce a challenge to the farmer boys for a game of base ball to be played in the near futute. Mr. Potter's train on Wednesday night went 'scooting'' by Chemawa without stopping. Such things must be expected on the 1st of April. v Judge and Mrs. Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Holverson and Mr. Bigger, all of Sa'em took, dinner aud spent the evening at Mr. Campbell's ou Saturday, They returned to Salem on the 10 o'clock train. Some verv interesting item by pupils ar rived entirely too late this week for. publi cation.
