Disciplinarian at the school and has re
ported for duty. Mr. Davis has been dis
ciplinarian for (he past six yeara at Fort
Lewis, Col., and latterly at Fort Mohave,
Arizona.

Governor Chamberlain has appointed
Dr. E. A. Pierce to fill a vacancy on the
State Board Of Health. The Board of
Hexllh is an important factor in looking
aftf r the sanitary interests of the State and
in Dr. Pierce's hands the local interests
will be intelligently looked after. Dr.
Fierce accepted the appointment and his
commission was issued. The Board has
quite a large appropriation to expend. ,
Dr Pierce is Vice President of the Salem
C nimerical Club, a graduate of the Uni
versity of the City of New York and a
member and Secretary of the Medical
Faculty of the Willamette Medical College.
He has a large practice and his appoint
ment will give the best of satisfaction to
tbe -medical profession and to the gen

The social at the Indian training school
Saturday evening, March 7, In hooor of
Major J. J. McKoiu's arrival and hb a
farewell to Superintendent and Mrs. D. D.
McArtliur, who loft for Fort Mohave, Ari
zona, Sunday afternoon, was one- of the
moHt succesHful and pleasant affairs of the
season. Tbe seats had been removed from
the schoolroom and the building was well
filled by pupils aud guests by 8 p. m. The
first number on the program was a quartet
by Mrs. Bryant, Miss Kruger, Messrs.
Arthur Bensell and Warren Hall. Next
was an instrumental solo by Mrs. Bryant.
, This was followed by an instrumental duot
by Mrs. Benaell and Mr. Gates, vocal solos
by Misses Esther Copeland, Cecile Clay
and Mrs. Bensell and an instrumental duet
by Miss Kruger and Mrs. Bryant. The
closing number was aquartetby Mesdamea
Bensell and Bryant and Messrs. Towner
and Bensell. All these numbers were ex
cellent and merited the applause tendered
them. The last number was enthusiastic
ally encored. Major McKoin was intro
duced, and his maiden speech in Siletz was
very good. HiB sociablaUty and courteous
ness was in evidence during the evening,
and every effort will be made by our good
people to have him feel at home among us.
Duncan D. McArthur's remarks to the
school and people were very appropriate.
In the girls' parlors games and social chat
occupied the time until supper was an
nounced. Your correspondent enjoyed
this feature of the entertainment as well as
any, especially the chicken salad, orange
cake, etc. Everyone enjoyed it. The din
ing room was tastefully decorated in
orange and green. Miss Kruger is an artist
In this line. Mrs. JEIaller and all those
who in any way contributed towards the

In what was undoubtedly the roughest
and probably the fastest game of boys'
basket ball ever played in our city, the
boys from the Fort Shaw Indian School
defeated the boys of H. H. 8. by a close
sooreof 13 toll. The two points which
were needed to tie the score could have
been made by a goal from the field In the
last minute of play, but all the ginger
which our team put into play in that
minute could not land tbe ball in the . net
and the game was lost.
Our team deserves a great deal of credit
for the pluck and endurance which they
exhibited, while the Indians, too, deserve
great credit for their skill at throwing
baskets. The Indian braves were much
taller and heavier than our team and bad
