Major Wilkinson,
Founder of Forest Grove, now Chemawa
The school was established February
25th. 1880, at Forest Grove, by Major
Wilkinson, almost simultaneously with
Col. Pratt's starting the work at Carlisle.
These two men commenced this great
educational movement, the one on the
Atlantic and the other on the Pacific, the
outgrowth of which has been the Indian
educational system of today.
The school was moved from Forest
Grove to its present location in 1883, and
after many vicissitudes, at last in 189G
started to have a steady, healthy growth
from 1200 pupils to its present size of over
(SOO. Its buildings were improved and
added to until today it is one of the finest
industrial plants in the Indian School
Service.
