T.i 'Harris, in his annual report for the fiscal year-1902, says that the bureau has main tained twenty-seven public schools in the territory, outside the incorporated towDa, during the past year,, with' thirty-three, teachers and an enrollment of 1 747 pupils. The fund for the maintenance of these schools is derived from the license moneys collected outside of the cities; one- half go ing to the school fund. The amount thus applied last year was $35,802.51. The (own of Nome received for school purposes $42,738.26. which was larger than necessary by $7,962, that amount having been turned back into the city treasury and used for other municipal purpose. The commission complains that the school boards at Nome, Juneau and Ketchikan, all incorporated, have refused to receive native children of Indian or Eskimo descent into existing schools or to open schools for them. He, however, suggests no remedy for what he evidently regards as an evil. On the subject of reindeer in Alaska, the commissioner says that owing to being o bliged by the Russian government to pay coin for reindeer in that empire, it wan on ly possible to secure thirty head.
