The cooks and bakers played a game of
foot-ball on New Year's day. Cooks won.
We see by the Native American that
Amy Bagnell was Mrs. Santa Claus at the
Fhoenix Xmas entertainment.
The Southern Pacific trains stop some
times a few minutes atChemawa in order
to let the passengers see the four bears. Al
least Mr. Campbell was told so;
The Excelsiors discussed their subject,

er. The progress of the Excelsior society
is something to be proud of.
Sauta Claus must have lost his reindeer
sled as he made his appearance at the
ma'queraile. Hitch up therlyers and take
the poor old clumsy fellovV' home. He
looked tired out, poor old man.
Mr. and Mrs. Woods and daughter Miss
Eva. Mrs. Cartbrae, Charles Cutter. John
Harris, Andrew Picard and a few others
who helped "swell the chorus" . made
some fine music in Mrs. Campbell's' parlor
on New Tear's night. '
Three prizes were offered for the best
cake walking at the masquerade, Mr.
PePoe and Mr. Cuisse won the first. Ma
tilda Romer and Georgie Girard the sec
ond, and Irene Campbell, Elvira Parrish
and Amelia Underville the third.
Alex rayles left Chemawa on Friday to
fil: a position in the Hupa school California.
Friday is an unlucky day, but we believe
Alex has got the stuff in him to make a
successful record in his new field ot labor,
Hayues Dewitt, one of the Painter.0,
made a new case for his saxophone, and it
is a very nice piece of work. Ilaynes
kerps his instrument clean and bright and
is vny careful about denting it. This is an
example that all would do well to imitate.
The Girls' Band Of Mercy met as usual
in the Girls' Home. The program consist
ed chi( fly of music but it. was very interest
ing;. Quite a number of dolls were in at
tendance, showir.gthatSanta Clans had re
membered many of the members of the
Band. After the program was finished the
meeting closed.
Harry Teio is again in the tailor shop
and he brought his thimble back with him.
This is an example of economy worthy of
imitation as it is haid for some boys to
keep a thimble two weeks while Harry kept
his for six months and it was not rusty
either,
Thomas McCloud leaves our blacksmith
shop this week after serving a three years
coarse, to work in a shop at Oak Harbor
Washington, at $10 per month and board.
Thoma3 has been a faithful apprentice and
we are all glad to see him striking out so
successfully.
Air. Wood in has received the sad news
of the death of his nephew L. E' Woodin,
Jr., aged 19 years, who resides with his
parents at Arkansas City, Kansas. Mr.
Wooden was one of the clerical force 'n the
P. O. derjjt. in that city at the time of his ,
death, and was an exemplary young man.
His death occurred on Dec. 19, 1901. .,
Our Superintendent made a flying trip to
Umatilla and got back with six new pupils
on Xmas eve. He reports Mrs, GaitMer's
school in a vny flourishing condition, with
nearly 100 pupils in attendance. New
buildings have been erected and valuable
improvements made. Airs. Gaither.is cer
tainly a model Superintendent, and isloved
by the Indian parents as well as the pupils.

ary Society on Thursday was to the point.
Indians need to concentrate their minds
and not jump from one trade to another.

Seldom was there a happier, jollier time
in Chemawa than on New . Year's eve at
the Annual .Masquerade and fancy dress
party in the gymnasium. The masks were
only worn ashort time but lung enough.to
mystify and deceive one's best friends.
The whole evening was one of happy in
nocent fun and when the bells chimed
forth the midnight hour many were the
sincere wishes given for a Happy New
Year.
