The Family Reunion
OHN, Jim and Harry Osburn were talking on the subject of
matrimony. ,
"If a girl really loves a man,” John had just remarked,
“i don’t believe she ever pauses to think of his personal ap­
pearance. The kind of a husband which the average sensible girl
wants is one who has enough brains and enough sense to make home
happy and interesting for her.”
“Well,” said Jim, “there may be a great deal in what you say,
but I could mention to you many girls who never think of anything
of that kind i t all when their thoughts run to matrimony. I know
a great many girls who care little for what a man knows, if he is
big and strong and good looking and can give her the impression
that he will be kind to her.”
“That may be true,” parried John cooly, “but you must admit
that the majqrity Of that class are not types of the well bred, well
trained, sensible yOung woman. For example, I think you must not
deny that what I am about to say is correct, when I assert that the
modern cultivated college woman of today has practically the ideal
in man which I have just mentioned. The modern college woman
wants a man for her husband who is going to be heard of after the
announcement of the wedding has appeared in the newspapers.”
“Well,” answered Jim, as he leaned on the mantle piece leisure­
ly, “the best type of woman may have that ideal, but the average
girl is willing to marry a man who is handsome even if he has only
a very few other good characteristics besides. I am not saying this
to be cynical. I am merely stating a fact.”
“Now, fellows,” Harry broke in, “I don’t believe either of you
knows anything about what he is talking about. For my part, I
don’t believe you can make any rule about what kind of a. man a
woman likes or dislikes. Love is an unexplainable emotion, any-
