versity, but because there
no immediate way of reaching all, of
tentimes these matters are not even heard of by some of the wom
en—by some, perhaps, whose ability would be appreciated had they
the opportunity to have a voice in the matter under discussion.
I believe, that all who attended the “Frolic” in the Gymnasium
last April, will appreciate thé benefit and pleasure thàt was derived
fiom it, Here the spirit of democracy and friendliness wefe asp ir
ent during the entire evening ; but of course this was a social affair
entirely. Through an Association, however, there could be both
the social and the business side. Both would have an equal share in
doing the work, and in keeping up the spirit of democracy.
A great deal has been said, of late, about the Oregon spirit, and
it has applied mostly to the men in their athletics. But this spirit
can be shown among the women, and applied to them as well, and
mean just as much to the University. Such a spirit must come from
all, no^ a few, and to reach all, there must be some way other than
mere, accident.
^.j^Epst of the cp-educatipnal colleges of the, country have an As
sociation pf women, and we do not want tp fall behind as a Univer
sity im any way* if therç-.can be help for it. Berkeley has such an
organization and.it has been very successful. This association was
organized, because the women of that institution had been deprived
of the “freedom of speech,” or something of that sort. They had
been deprived of the privilege of suffrage in the college politics, I
believe,, arid they rebelled., We women of the University of’Oregon,
fortunately, have been heard with due respect, so far as we know,
and I believe that we all appreciate that fact. But there would be
so much good derived from a Woman’s Association, and as it must
come soon, anyway, it seems that the sooner such an organization
can, be: perfected, the better it will be for ; the,University.
