advancement. The middle c-laSs will 'be lethargic for they are bound
down by meaningless conventionalities, na'rt-ow prejudices and old
habits of thinking. The -poof,- forced to continually slave for «a
bare subsistance-, will have-neither ‘the time nor opportunity'to e d
ucate themselves above an ignorant plane w-hehe they ate blindly
led this Way and that, for another^ gain add th eir loss.

To attend lectures regularly and to - pass examinations cred

hau sts th e factors which should enter into the education of the col

-College life, although generally regarded as á period when
ideals reign and-the Ungentle influence Of reality tis minimized, is, nev
ertheless, for m ostpa period of preparation for future activity. The
college youth. is near enough to the battle of life to 'hear
call,-and
he yearns for the fra y in ' which he soon may fake a p a rt. H is longing
compels him to-play a t w ar in football, in debate and in journalistic
■competition. In this pastóme his glance becomes sure, I his arm
skillfui for the time whew the joust will -no longer be with blunted
lances. Recognition of some sudh need has led to the -assumption
b y most student bodies o f the conduct Esr certain activities, which
offer the student the opportunity for free, healthful competition and
alW onnd culture'.
The student-body o f-th e University of., Oregon supports as
many activities as any college in the Northwest. Among them are
