divide upon the question of Christian education
—the one is pro-Christian and the other is anti-
Christian—the selfish anti-Christian sect insists upon having
its children educated at the public expense—insists upon the
state supporting Godless schools.”
We quote from parts of a letter to the Oregonian, print
ed in the issue for January first. The writer is a man of
some importance in Oregon educational circles.
The Monthly has no wish to defend from such an attack
the institution it serves, believing the defense already self-
evident in the minds of all clear thinking people. This mode
of attack moreover appeals only to the biased. But we would
offer some reflections on the subject. Why stop short in
this- process of discrimination, why limit ourselves to educa
tion? Why not divide other functions of the state into pro-
and anti-Christian? Let us take government, and after sep
arating the sort in which best flourishes psalm singing, from
the sort not so favorable to that pastime, let us pay taxes
accordingly. We sternly refuse to support any non-denom-
inational government. Then let us take the regulation of
commerce. We will improve no waterways, build no railroads
