essentials of a truly liberal education. The next question is
how shall we go about to get them? Can we get them out
side of college halls?' It matters not where we secure our
knowledge as to what we have got. . W hether it be in the
wilderness, the city, or the college or university, the essential
thing is. what We make of our knowledge. To most people
the college is the proper. place, but a self-made man may
secure it wherever he may be. Liberal culture, then, is the
possession of equipment in the hands of men who know how
to put it to the best use.
Let me in conclusion say, that we uphold, cherish, and
hand down the idea of liberal culture as one of the most im
portant things that our generation possesses. : Let us take
courage, and determine that our influence wherever felt, shall
be on the side of. enlargement, improvement, and the invig-
oration of all the intellectual powers of man.

Alone in his studio ¿at the great artist. He was waiting
for the coming of the'critics. An easel was before him on
which rested the picture, curtained.
All his life he had
longed to paint this picture, but although he had grown fam
ous and had enriched himself with the praises and offerings
of his fellow men, the really great thing he had never attained.
Now the dream , was come true, for he had painted a
great picture, He felt this with the conviction of one who
has given birth. All the world would know that it was great,
for he had caught the red flush of life, the breath and sweet
ness of life.
So the artist sat calm and still in the half-light waiting
for the coming of the critics. W ith folded hands and half
shut lids he Sat and dreamed of the power that was in him.
