Three freshmen and five u p p erclass-
ment made the prelim inary eig h t at th e
first debate tryout of the y e a r w hich
was held in Villard H all on S a tu rd a y
afternoon. Of the u p p erclassm en tw o,
Bond and Nicholas, are v e te ra n s in in
terstate work, while the o th e r th ree,
Robinson. Lyans and C ollier, are of
recognized forensic ability . T h e fre sh
men are Gammans, C ash, an d R av.
Twenty men entered the try o u t. T h e
preparation was m ore th o ro u g h th a n
for any previous try o u t, and som e six
men ranked im m ediately below th o se
chosen. The final try o u t will be held
on January 8 to choose six d e b a te rs
for the interstate team s. J u d g e s in th e
preliminary were P resid en t C am pbell,
Dr. lames IE G ilbert, and D r. H . D.
Sheldon. S. E. Eliot, the d eb a te coach,
was time keeper. 1 le ex p resses him self
as well pleased with the q u a lity of th e
work done by all the c o n te s ta n ts and
says that in default of the first eig h t
chosen, a second eight m en could be
selected of nearly equal ab ility .
The question discussed w as the one
that will be used in the final in te rs ta te
debate, and reads : “ R esolved, th a t
waiving all question of c o n s titu tio n a l
ity. it would be advisable for th e U n it
ed States to adopt a p ro g ie ssiv e federal
income tax on all incom es above a
certain specified a m o u n t.” T h is is th e

Athletic Council Favors Campus Game

cision of the athletic council Friday
night. T his decision is final, as the
athletic council makes ( )regon's sched
ule,, and will refuse to play the A gri
cultural College anyw here except on
the cam pus. T his action is in the rec
ognition of student, faculty and alum ni
sentim ent as it has been expressed ever
since the idea of taking the game to
P ortland was first m entioned. The
sp o rtin g editors of all three Portland
papers are bitterly opposed to a cam
pus gam e, and have been pulling
strongly for a Portland game. The
saner editorial sentim ent of these pa
pers how ever does not seem to insist
on the advisability of a m etropolitan
contest. At any rate, the m atter is
settled by the action of the council. O.

pus hereafter, or not at all.
