Debate interest is growing. A list
has been posted tor the names of those
intending to try out tor interstate
teams, and has already been signed 1»\
nineteen men. The com m ittee on o r
atory and debate leels that there should
he at least forty contestants in the first
prelim inary, ¡'his prelim inary will he
held in some room in V illard Hall on
December 12th. If the list is long, the
try out will probably last all day.
Each aspirant for interstate honors
will he given nine m inutes, or some
other stated amount of time, in which
to present his views upon one side or
other of the question. The judges will
be members of the faculty. Eight d e
baters will he chosen. The second pre
limiuary, held after C hristinas vaci
tion. will bring the num ber down to
six, and assign the men to places on
the team. In the first prelim inary the
order of speaking will he alternately
a man from each side, the sides being
arranged in alphabetical order. It is
probable that there will he at least two
girls in the coming try out, although
tltev have not yet signed the list. This
is the first year that women have
shown interest in interstate debate eon
tests, although at W ashington and else
where there are some alw ays anxious
to try out. Phe freshman class is more
interested in debate than any of the
other classes. Prof. E. E. De C on’s
work in .the High School D ebating
League probably deserves most of the
credit for this interest. T he men who
have already signed for the prelim
inary are:
Seniors: '1'. R. 'I'ownsend, J. II. Bond,
Earl Kilpatrick. Ju n io rs: C. A. Steele,
C. Paine Shaiigle, M . C. Nicholas, llai
old Imlson Rounds.
Sophom ores:

inen: Allvn E. Rolierts, A Burleigh
Cash. L. Leon Ray. N. R. Clem, Ralph
Moores. Earl Jones. W inn Nicholas, X.
Gammans.
The list is on the stu d en t's bulletin
hoard in Villard Hall ami is open to
signatures until the date of the try out.
Persons signing should also report
their names to Herbert h. I larke,
m anager of oratory and debate.
Stuart M cQueen, '07, was visiting
with relatives in Eugene last week,
lie has an excellent position as a n a ly t
