interest on the cam pus w as draw n to
the m atter by the report of som e of the
freshm en th at th ey had to tell funny
stories in elocution classes. In v e sti
gation proved th a t such was indeed
the case, and conversation w ith Mr.
Eliot show ed the m otive of such a
seem ing d ep artu re from generally ac
cepted ideas concerning the teach in g
of elocution.
“ 'Phe m ethod," said M r. E liot, “ is
new s o .fa r as my observation has ex
tended. ft is based upon tw o com m on
sense principles, first th at the m ind,
to grasp an idea, m ust com e to it with
interest ; and second, that as only so
much atten tio n can be given to a p ro
cess. the m ore the process is sim plified,
the m ore likely it is that good resu lts
will follow.
“ By h aving the stu d en ts tell stories,
I aim to secure (heir active in terest,
to get them ‘w arm ed' up to the subject
in hand.
“ By h aving them th u s put p ra c t’ce
before theory, I hope to give a basis,
w hereon to apply theory. A football
coach does not rell a man how to fall
on a ball the firs* thing. He th ro w s
the ball on the ground and has the
m an fall on it. T h en he corrects the
m ethod of falling, and has only to
correct the erro rs in the o p e ra tio n .’
So the aim in mv m ethod is to get the
student to speak first w ithout rules.

correction will be m ade and theory
applied upon tin* basis of the show ing
made at the s ta r t.”
