T h e first College H our at the U ni
versity of O regon is now a m a tte r of
the past. A lthough it was g o tten up
w holly w ithout any definite plan, it is
needless to say th at it was a big su c
cess.
A long d u rin g the S pring m onths
when ev erybody is anxiously aw aitin g
the close of the college year there is
a ten dency to forget for the m om ent
the d u ty w hich one owes his university.
In th e fall when everybody is th o r
oughly refreshed, tanned and rested
by his su m m e r’s work and besides, has
a co m fo rtab le account in a dow n-tow n
bank as a result of his labors, it is
easy to be happy and generous to
w ard the X’arsity . T hen the ‘‘Rah,
Rah, O re g o n ’s ” come with g re ater
vehem ence then now. N ever is the
college spirit so good as d u rin g the
football season when the whole year
is ahead.
T h e in stitu tio n of a plan such as the
college h o u r has done much at m any
of o u r larg e r in stitu tio n s to am elio r
ate these conditions. The general ef
fect of the plan is to bring the faculty
in to closer touch with stu d en ts and
to m ake stu d e n ts b etter u n d erstan d
the stern faculty.
At m ost of the colleges w here the
C ollege H o u r idea has been adopted
the four classes take turns in actin g as
h o sts, the g irls take their tu rn and
the men also show their en terta in in g
L ooking over the list of stu d en t ac
tivities in which the women stu d en ts
of the U niversity can participate, the
sm all chance given the fair sex is very
evident. Aside from the sm all n u m
ber of girls on our tw o college papers
and in the Y. M. C. A. and E u tax ian
Society, very few girls are doing any
w ork at all aside from th eir reg u lar
college duties, which m ight correctly
be term ed student body activities.
'Pile fault does not lie w ith the w om
en of the U n iv ersity ; because it is a
well know n fact th at in m a tte rs of
scholarship the g en tler sex w ould m ake
a very favorable com parison with th eir
male contem poraries. T he real re a
son for the seem ing indifference on the
part of the women is th at th ere is n o th
ing which they can take part in to any
great extent.
Yow to give the co-eds a chance to
do som ething before the year is over
t h e editor of the W eek ly w ishes to
m ake a proposition.
W e will very
w illingly turn over the control of the
O regon W eekly to the wom en of the
U niversity for one edition to be know n
as a special W o m en ’s E dition of the
publication. The m em bers of the
W eekly staff will be perfectly w illing
to do an y th in g possible to assist the
tem porary editors.
At all the leading u n iv ersities of the
country the women put out at least
one o f the editions of the college paper
a vear. T here is no reason w hy the
girls at the U niversity cannot put out
a paper which will com pare favorably

In m ost cases th ere is a logical can
didate for every office on the list and
such a person should be elected in that
event : but in case th ere is a question
as to w hether one m an is m ore deserv
ing than an o th er a little w holesom e
rivalry if conducted upon p ro p er lines
can do no harm .
P artisian sh ip should not en ter into
consideration
in th is election. It
should be the aim of every stu d en t to
vote individually as he th in k s best,
and not to be influenced ag a in st his
b e tte r ju d g m en t. L et th e b est m an
win.
Mr. E. S chw arzschild inform s the
W eekly th at the G erm an societies of
the state are a unit in favor of the I ni-
versity ap p ro p riatio n . M r. S ch w arzs
child has presen ted the m a tte r to the
Lane C ounty societies and they have
stro n g ly endorsed th e bill. T he G er
m an new spapers su p p o rt it strongly.
All m em bers of th e G erm an societies
and lodges of O reg o n have been a sk
ed by th eir officers to w ork for the bill.
