ceded, the achievem ents of the mind
are more valuable th an the exhibition
of physical prow ess, V illard hall should

team s are trained as th o ro u g h ly as ever
football men were train ed , they know
every phase of the in te re stin g forensic
gam e in which they are to engage, and
sarcastic play of words betw een trained
debaters, w hich will be as in terestin g
to the refined and educated au d ito r as
a football scrim m age where it is “third
dow n and ten to go.” T he N orthw est
cham pionship is also at stake, and in
an activ ity which the people of the
state at large estim ate more highly
th an any branch of athletics, for it
show s the developm ent of mind and
reasoning pow ers which m easures the
success of the U niversity.
T he debate will, of course, be in
tensely in te re stin g to O regon stu d en ts
on account of the great stake involved,
and it will also be in terestin g to o th
ers. T he question of Japanese ex
clusion is an exceedingly live one, and
one in which all citizens, and especially
lab o rin g m en, are interested. No one
can be indifferent as to w hether the
w hite m an in O regon. T h is the af
firm ative team , under the able lead er
ship of Jesse H . Bond, assisted by such
w o rth y colleagues as W a lte r M. E aton
and W . C. N icholas, will contend he
should not do. T he topic of Jap an ese
exclusion is bound to grow in in terest.
A ny citizen w ho w ishes a th o ro u g h
u n d e rsta n d in g of both sides of the
