Mr. Schafer, o f the d epartm ent of his
tory, is perfecting a schem e to institute
a g reat new spaper library w hich will
eventually becom e historical in value.
H e will secure copies of every Oregon
w eekly paper and keep th e files as they
are p rin ted , having th e yearly volum es
bound. In th is way records of every
section of Oregon will be k ep t intact.
T he value of such a collection will be
recognized w hen we realize th at not a
vestige of official record now rem ains of
various im portant events in L ane county
p rior to a very few years ago. F iles of
papers are destroyed and w hile we have
no historians, it will be only a m atter of
tim e w hen th e very events of today in
Oregon will be questioned and failing of
p ro o f m ay be discarded as w orthless.
M r. Schafer’s idea carried out will cer
tain ly elim inate th is danger. A sim ilar
lib rary in every state university would
be an innovation w orthy to be sustained,
and certainly would become valuable
records in th e future.

able enthusiasm by th e girls. M embers

devours its contents and forgets to hand
