The Conference at Pacific Grove.
The Young M en’s Christian Associa­
tion» of the Pacific West concluded last
Sunday night, (Jan 6; the largest and
most successful conference ever held on
the coast. Over one hundred representa­
tives of college associations were present
to study, under the directions of able
1 aders, the problem s and principles of
Y. M. C. A work. C. T. Colton, known
to the students of th e coast through his
recent visit, was the leader of the con­
vention and was ably assisted by H ibbard,
geuerul secretary at N orthw estern Uni­
versity, Geo. W. L eavitt, traveling sec­
retary for the Student V olunteer move­
m ent, ami John R. M ott, the best
organizer of Y. M. C. A. work in the
country.
Several helpful addresses were made
before the convention by visiting speak­
ers, notably Dr. C lam pit and Dr. Nash,
from Sun Francisco, ami Dr. M inton, of
San Anselmo Sem inary.
Twenty-two universities and colleges
were represented at the conference,
twelve of them being in the Pacific
Northwest and represented by twenty-
one men. The University of Oregon was
represented by W. C. Adams, Geo. O
G oodall, Geo. W ilson, E. E. Coad and
Oscar G orrell. These men come back
with m any helpful and practical ideas on
organization and system atic w ork, and,
having caught to some degree the spirit
of the greatest young m en’s m ovem ent of
the century, hope with the aid of their
Association fellows to m ake possible a
great advance in Association affairs.
The dom inant note struck by the lead­
ers was one of ln»i>e. Hope for the
student of the future and through the
student the whole fabric of society which
students will control and construct. The
student is com ing m ore and more to ap­
preciate the fact th at the suprem e life is
the life of service, that prophets and
seers and sages have not spoken in vuin
through all the ages past and th at a life
of C hristian brotherhood is truly possible
to the son» of m en.
