We do not know where the i<lea started, or who first proposed the debate, but we aie strongly opposed to any such m ovem ent. We are heartily in favor of debating contests with other iustitutions, but let these institutions be of recognized collegiate or university rank, not agricultural colleges, norm al or preparatory schools. If the latter named institutions must be met, let the freshmen or the second team accommo- dale them . W e do not wish to be under- stood as casting any reflection on W. A. C or a iy kin Ire 1 place of learning, but w e believe that the I niversity of Oregon should cope with colleges of her own rank. J here are plenty of them here in the Northwest and it is not necessary to seek intellectual contests with students who are fitting them selves for agricultural and m echanical work. * • ’ T h e tim e for oratory and debate is fast approaching. In form er years the Uni- versity of Oregon has won a fair share of victories and we hope that the fates will be with us again this season.
