STRO N G ER TO G ETH ER
Nathan Jacobi is a retired
scientist. He doesn’t look
like a social activist, but
he’s the force behind a new
pro-active, advocacy group
for disabled people based
in Southern Oregon. The
group is called DUDE -
Disabled United in
Distressing Environments.
DUDE’S goals are to
provide a voice for the
disabled and to raise public
awareness about the plight
of the disabled. “Most
disabled end up falling
between the cracks,” says
Nathan. “It’s time to be
much more aggressive.”
Last fall, Nathan’s wife
Rhea, who is disabled, had
all her services cut off by
the state. They fought to
get most of Rhea’s services
restored and then decided
to form DUDE to help
others fight for better
treatment. In April, DUDE
co-sponsored a rally and
march in Medford that
attracted about 100 people
who demanded that the
State of Oregon stop
cutting services to the
disabled. DUDE is putting
out a video about the
state’s new mobility rules
and is beginning to get
active politically. Contact
DUDE at: 541-488-5639 or
