Nursing Home workers
sav, “Union, Yes!”
In a series of elections in April, workers at six Avamere and Evergreen
nursing homes in Oregon voted to join SEIU Local 503. The victories
at Avamere and Evergreen put all union nursing home workers in a
stronger position to make improvements at work.
"We at Newport Rehab are delighted to have become a union
through our strength in numbers," said Delphine Talnagi and Wanda
Hendrix.
Workers at Evergreen facilities in Portland and The Dalles and at two
La Grande nursing homes also voted to join the union. With these
four victories, Evergreen is the first 100% union nursing home chain
in Oregon.
Avamere Newport and South Salem employees also voted union.
Now, workers at five Avamere facilities in Oregon are unionized.
Over the last two years workers at 17 nursing homes have joined our
union. But it's clear that we have hard work ahead to insure that all
nursing home workers in Oregon have an opportunity to organize
without facing intimidation by management.
