Legislators hear about our issues at Lobby Days
Mary McGrath
ODFW, Portland
Homecare and DMV members lobby Senator Peter Courtney to ask what
he plans to do about soaring health care profits and insurance premiums.
Whether we are concerned about long-term care, higher education,
the state contract, health care, or other worksite issues, our elected
officials need to hear from us. The state legislature will be making
decisions about funding for our wages and benefits and the services
we provide the public. Legislators will be debating issues like
out-of-control health care costs, privatization, and PERS. Lobby
Days are our opportunity to talk with legislators, watch the legisla
ture in action, and weigh in on issues we care about

This was my first time
lobbying. I wasn't sure
how to make my point, but
SEIU staff helped. Many
legislators didn't even
know we were bargaining
our contract, so talking to
them was important. I
hope we can continue
doing this positive activity.
It's good for our
democracy. 99
My experience at the Capitol
couldn't have been better.
The training was excellent
and I really felt like I made
a difference. My favorite
part of the day was talking
to my legislators. I learned
a great deal and would
definitely do this again. 99
Our voices are important
We have a unique perspective about the services we provide.
Managers are in the Capitol all day long, but front-line workers
need to be heard as well.
Our union provides training, materials, and support to make sure
that the politicians who will be voting on our budgets, our health
care, and our wages hear from us. Sign up today for an exciting
day in the Capitol or ask your steward or organizer for more
information. You can sign up on-line at www.seiu503.org

I was able to tell my
legislators how rising
health care costs affect me
and my clients. I really
enjoyed meeting with
Senator Courtney and
Representative Komp. Now
that I've done this once, I
want to do it again. 99
