As an individual who has worked with these Agencies, I feel
as though there are concerns that need to be addressed.
As a District Director I plan on recruiting as many Homecare
Workers to be members as possible at any length including
and not limited to going door to door. One thing I have
learned with the Home Care Works is if we stand together
and yell loud enough and long enough they will listen. We
as a whole have a stronger and louder voice so sooner or
later they will hear us.
As your District Director I would gather all issues of all are
Union members and represent them to the best of my ability.

ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU
DURING YOUR TERM?
I am seeking the office of District Director to continue toe
work that has been started by the current Board, and to learn
more about the workings of OPEU at toe state level so that
District #4 remains an important part of toe decision making
process of our Union. I also want to ensure that Local and City
Governments are represented at toe Board.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT?
To bring toe workers of District #4 closer together by returning
to our Union roots and having toe topics of WAGES, BEN
EFITS, CONDITIONS AND HOURS be our main priorities.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION
WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW
WOULD YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? Many
members do not understand or trust toe policies of O PER The
rank and file members feel that we have forgotten about them
and their concerns. If I am elected to this position I will stove
to bring these topics and concerns to toe Board.
OTHER INFORMATION TO SUPPORT YOUR
CANDIDACY: The members of OPEU need to remember
that we are one body of strength and we can only remain
strong as long as we take care of each other. I plan to help
build a bridge between toe Board and the rank and file
members explaining why thinks are done toe way they are and
why we need their support in all things.

OFFICE? I am qualified for this office
because of my years of service in my
local. I have been shop steward at toe
Nursery on two separate occasion. I have been Secretary of
local 629 for two years, Chief Steward of Local 629, served on
the selection committee. I take my commitment to SEIU
LOCAL 503 OPEU seriously. I have watched D.L. Phipps
undermine toe state worker and I know where we would be
without toe Union. I would like to be toe assistant district
director so I would be in position to help my fellow state
employees.
UNION EXPERIENCE NOT ITEMIZED ABOVE:
I helped stop toe nursery’s attempt at contracting out work at
toe nursery in 1992. I’ve been an activist with this union since
1979, and would do. my best to serve my local, district and
state union to the best of my abilities.
WHY ARE YOU SEEKING THIS OFFICE AND WHAT
ARE YOUR GOALS FOR SEIU LOCAL 503, OPEU
DURING YOUR TERM? I would like to help this Union
join all its different locals into a force to be reckoned with. I
would like to see each local ready to support another local at a
moment’s notice. I think with toe budget cuts and cost saving
measures toe Governor is planning, that each and every local
within this union is at risk. I believe this will be a trying time
for our union and I would like to give my time and knowledge
in seeing it through.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT?
I would like to see membership increase and our present
members become more active in toe union.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION
WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW OULD
YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? The biggest single
issue facing our union will be cut backs and contracting out.
We need to find out from our members where legitimate cuts
can be made and what we as a union can do to help implement
these changes. I strongly feel only the people actually doing
these jobs can successfully come up with the solutions.

forestry but all other locals as well.

activist for many years and have held

Assistant Director). Besides these I have been on many state
wide committees including CAPE, Injured Workers, Health,

UPPNET, toe Union Producers and Programmers Network an
ASJE, toe Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment
(current labor chair). Twice I have taken leave of absence from
my job and have worked for SEIU. The first time was prior to
and during our 1995 strike, and the second was last August
when I spent 3 weeks in Sacramento working on the contract
campaign for local 1000, toe California Employees Associa
tion.

DURING YOUR TERM?
I’m seeking office because union activism is toe most
important work one can do. Working people are under attack
and I will continue organizing to fight back by bringing
together toe voices of many workers. I particularly like
coalition building and will work towards joining forces with
those in our communities who will help us fight the good fight.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR DISTRICT?
I want to make it easier for folks to participate. Geographi
cally, those of us in toe outlands have a harder time being
active. Making that meeting in Salem right after work just
doesn’t work. We will need to use technology in smarter ways.
Soon we will not only be tele-conferencing but we will be
video- conferencing from all across our state.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE ISSUE THE UNION
WILL FACE DURING YOUR TERM AND HOW OULD
YOU PROPOSE TO RESOLVE IT? Privatization is toe
single most important issue we have to contend with. Al
though the term GATS doesn’t sound very sexy, it is impera
tive that we learn about this plan that calls for removing all
barriers to trade in services. Along with toe other global
corporate plans we have a huge amount of education to prepare
for this fight in front of us.
