District 35, Corvallis
Vast experience in local elective office where
she has won election for Benton County Commissioner
three times, and the Corvallis School Board, running for

seat in a district with a 2,000+ Democratic registration
edge.
Robert Shook
District 3, Portland
Running for an open seat currently held by a
Democrat. Unopposed in the Primary, but will face a
current House Republican looking to move up and a
former Senator who held the same seat in the 1970s.
Peter Tarzian
District 36, Albany
A former Democratic state legislator from
Medford with an academic background in collective
bargaining who will mount a strong challenge in Novem
ber to the current House Republican leader who has a
three of seven 1993 OPEU voting record.
Jack Johnson
District 45, Roseburg
A recently-retired school teacher who defeated
an incumbent to win a seat on the Roseburg City Council,
he has worked part-time as an Oregon Education Associa
tion bargaining spokesperson for teachers in Douglas
County school districts. Challenging an anti-public em
ployee Republican in a district with nearly equal Demo
crat-Republican registration.
Jim Gourley
District 37, Sweet Home
A paid activist for the past three years for Local
1189 of the United Paperworkers International Union, he
is also on the Sweet Home City Council. A strong
candidate who will run in the General Election against an
incumbent with a 43% OPEU voting record.
Mike Lehman
District 47, Coos Bay
An attorney active in his community including
14 years on the Coos Bay School Board running for an
open seat currently held by a Democrat.
Hank Vredenburg
District 38, Woodburn
A high school teacher who has been president
andnegotiatorforthe union. He understands and supports
our issues and will be running in November against
freshman Republican Patty Milne, who has aligned her
self with Bob Tieman and the initative to eliminate the 6%
PERS pickup.
Jim Edmunson
District 39, Eugene
A good friend of OPEU with a strong record of
leadership on labor and public employee issues.
Cynthia Wooten
District 41, Eugene
A consistent and reliable supporter of OPEU
and an active proponent of labor issues generally.
Lee Beyer
District 42, Springfield
An effective spokesperson for our issues on the
key Commerce Labor Subcommittee.
Chuck Ivey
District 43, Crow
A pro-labor candidate with extensive local gov
ernment elective experience where he has been mayor of
Junction City, a Lane County Commissioner, and a mem
ber of the Lane Community College board. He faces both
Primary and General Election opposition for House
Speaker Larry Campbell’s open seat This race could
figure in control of the House.
Tony Corcoran
District 44, Cottage Grove
OPEU/SEIU Local 503 organizer based in the
Eugene office, running for an open seat previously held by
a Democrat. The Primary is the key election in this race.
Bob Repine
District 49, Grants Pass
An incumbent Republican who is open to our
issues and respected among his peers and who single
handedly stopped passage of the bill to eliminate em
ployee transfer rights.
Lou Hannum
District 50, Medford
A past mayor and Medford City Council mem
ber taking on the incumbent Republican who used his
chairmanship of the Labor Subcommittee to promote
anti-public employee legislation.
Steve Hauck & Judith Uherbelau
District 52, Ashland
Hauck is a community activist with extensive
experience in local government; Uherbelau is a registered
nurse who works as an attorney and has served on the
Jackson County Budget Committee. They are seeking
election to an open seat currently held by a pro-public
employee Democrat; the Primary Election winner will
face an anti-public employee candidate who held the seat
during die 1991 legislative session.
Gary Barrett
District 56, The Dalles
A newspaper columnist and fonner Los Ange
les Police Department sergeant seeking election to an
open seat currently held by the retiring House Republican
leader.
Joan Silver
District 59, Kimberly
Running for an open seat currently held by a
Democrat in one of the state’s largest House districts.
Randy Leonard
District 9, Portland
A firefighter and former union lobbyist who was
a strong participant in the PERS Coalition. Appointed to
the Legislature following the session to fill a vacancy, he ’ s
facing his first election.
Dave McTeague
District 12, Milwaukie
A longtime strong supporter of public employee
and labor rights attempting to move into the Senate
against a Republican incumbent.
Jay Watts
District 14, Clackamas
In a contested Primary for an open seat, he hopes
to move on to the General Election where he will face a
Republican House member with a three of seven 1993
OPEU voting record.
Tricia Smith
District 17, Salem
One of the Legislature’s strongest and visible
proponents of public employee and women’s issues.
She chaired the Senate Labor Committee in the 1993
Legislative Session. She was honored by the state
Commission for Women as a Woman of Achievement
for her sponsorship of the 1993 Oregon Women’s
Health and Wellness Act. She is a speaker at many
PERS Coalition and Union functions, including the
June 5 Public Employee March & Rally. She faces
Primary and General Election opposition.
Cliff Trow
District 18, Corvallis
An articulate and strong- willed fighter and de
fender of Higher Education and Human Resources as
cochair of the Ways and Means Committee.
Pete Sorenson
District 20, Eugene
Appointed to fill a vacancy, he faces his first
election in a district that is important to keep to maintain
the Democratic majority in the Senate. He has supported
OPEU and its allies in previous activities as well.
Bill Dwyer
District 21, Springfield
A union member and influential member of the
Ways and Means Committee who carries with him a
concern for working families.
Karsten Rasmussen
District 22, Eugene
Appointed to a vacated seat early in the session;
facing his first election. Supportive of OPEU concerns.
