It is tim e to make up yo u r m ind
about what you w ill accept in your
contract.
In the last three m onths I have
been to m any d ifferent parts of
the state and m et w ith people in
their w orkplaces about what they
want in th e ir contract. It’s nice to
know the union is alive and well
where it counts the m ost—in the
o ffice and in the shop. But I am
concerned that mem bers have
not given m uch th o u g h t fo what
w ould be an acceptable eco
nom ic package.
In all my m eetings w ith people, I
have asked tw o questions: what
do you want fo r a pay increase
and, then, what w ill you settle for?
Every group has answered the
firs t question by te llin g me how
expensive th in g s are and w hat the
cost o f living is. They answer the
second question by asking me
how m uch can we get.
I like the firs t answer. I d o n 't like
the second.
What Do You See In The
Way Of A Pay Raise
Proposal From The State?
In this bargaining year, each of
you w ill have to answer the
question, “ How m uch w ill I settle
fo r? ” We w atched the Gresham
teachers strike fo r over tw o
w eeks.'Now the M cM innville steel
w orkers are preparing to strike
even though alm ost 50 percent of
the total w orkers are laid off.
O ther groups have settled fo r pay
increases o f less than the cost of
living and even less than the
national average fo r co n tra ct
settlem ents. This sum m er you w ill
have to vote to accept the
negotiated am ount o r to reject it.
The choice w ill be yours.
Fifty-one em ployes—at least
one from every agency—w ill help
determ ine the final contract. Then
we w ill begin a statew ide ra tifica
tio n in the offices and in the
shops. A ll over the state it w ill be
decision tim e. I hope there is
m u c h d is c u s s io n and m a n y
people involved. A good contract
is one in w hich we all take part.
