JANUARY, 1970 The OSEA News Page 9 Inquiring Photographer To the Editor: I would like to send a letter of thanks to OSEA and Field R e p r e s e n t a t iv e D onald Beninger. — I have been an OSEA member ever since going to work for the state 13 years ago. I always fe lt OSEA would be a help to me if I ever needed it. And last month I did. A situation arose which I felt was unfair. My supervisor changed my days off. I im m e d ia te ly contacted Don Beninger and he helped me maintain my seniority rights. I feel every state worker should belong to OSEA. We need someone to help us protect our working rights. Opal Eatherly Chapter 28 To the Editor: As president of Prison Chapter 56, I want to convey my thanks to OSEA staff member Donald A. Beninger for helping out all of the employees at the Oregon State Penitentiary who had a salary problem. The problem came about when the pay range fo r cor rectional officers was reduced from six to four steps. That a c tio n created inequities because new employees hired at- the first step (the old third step) were, after six months on the job, being paid more than employees who had up to 18 m onths service. I t also created a severe morale problem. To my knowledge, all of the pay inequites at the peni tentiary have been corrected. T h a t was m ade possible through a cooperative effort among Don Deninger, Peni tentiary Superintendent H oyt Cupp and John Galvin and Amos Reed of the Corrections Division. I want to emphasize those tw o w o rd s , “ cooperative e ffo rt." Because that's just what it was. The resolution of the problem was a real shot in the arm fo r me. I think it is a fine example of how the association has enhanced the relationship between employees and the administration o f our insti tution. I want Don Beninger and everyone else to know I appreciate it. L. L. Sullivan President Chapter 56 To the Editor: We at the Oregon Liquor Control Commission would like to publicly thank OSEA staff member Everett Stiles fo r coming to our Portland office to discuss the new PERS vari able annuity program. S e v e ra l persons have mentioned to me that they considered Ev's talk to be the best presentation on the re tirement system that they have ever heard. This is typical of the kinds o f service provided b y OSEA to th e state employee, w ith no regard as to whether those in the audience are members of the association. Robert M. Shepherd Assistant Administrator OLCC To the Editor: On behalf of the Public Employes Retirement Board, I wish to publicly express our a p p r e c ia t io n to OSEA Executive Secretary Thomas C. Enright fo r his tremendous effort on the Special Re- c r u itm e n t S c r e e n in g Committee. The committee was established to recruit and screen candidates fo r executive secretary of the PERS to replace the late Max M. Manchester. A fter interviewing the six finalists, we are fu lly aware o f th e tim e and effo rt the c o m m itte e expended to consider each of the 100 appli cants. Chalmers L. Jones Chairman, Public Employes Retirement Board WE W ANT EVERYONE TO GET THE NEW5 Do you know any of your fellow OSEA members who are not getting their monthly issue o f the NEWS? (Asked at Water Resources Board, Salem) ROBERT E. NYE New Assistant Drector GORDON HOLMAN Engineering Technician Nye New ADD In District Six OSEA's District Six Presi dents' Council has elected Robert E. Nye to replace Margaret B. Foster as assistant director o f the district. The election took place at the council meeting last month in Corvallis. He was opposed by three other candidates. The office became vacant upon Mrs. Foster's election to OSEA's Board o f Directors as membership director at the 1969 General Council. Nye is a former president o f University o f Oregon Faculty Chapter 77 in Eugene. He also served as a delegate to the General Council. He is a professor in the UO's School o f Music, w ith 20 years of service. His wife, also a m em ber of C h a p te r associate professor College o f Education. 77, in is the Yes. I elected to place 50 per cent o f my future retirement contributions into the stock market, plus the maximum amount of my past contributions. I chose to invest the maximum amount because I think that plan w ill bring a much greater return when I retire. GORDON OLCOTT Geologist Yes, I went in all the way. Investing the fu ll amount in the stock market is the only possible method to partially beat inflation. I would definitely recommend the variable annuity program to other employees—especially to a fam ily man w ith the responsibilities of children. QUENTIN BOWMAN Natural Resources Representative Yes, but I decided to invest only 25 per cent the first year. I want to see what types of stocks w ill be bought. If the stocks of medium-sized, growth compan ies w ith good futures are purchased, I w ill invest the other 25 per cent o f my retirement contributions. FRANK HOPKINS Data Engineer Yes, the fu ll amount. It appeared to be a good method of getting into the stock market. I don't think it's much o f a risk. If the market advances, the amount of money in my pension advances. If it takes a real nosedive, so w ill the whole economy. $ 2 0 0 FOR CHRISTMAS Geor9e Darland- right, president of Eulane Chapter 40, hands Jaycee Jack Schulze a check for $200 donated by the chapter. The money was used by the Santa Clara Jaycees to take 40 youngsters from needy families in the Eugene area Christmas shopping. JEAN KNEPPER Accounting Clerk Eugene Chapter Donates *200 For Christmas Shopping Tour A group of children in the Eugene area got to go Christmas shopping this year thanks to members of OSEA's Eulane Chapter 40. They contributed $200 to the Santa Clara Jaycees for its annual Christmas shopping to u r fo r underprivileged children. The money was used by the children, aged 6 to 12, to purchase Christmas gifts for members of their families. The Jaycees and their wives, along w ith 40 youngsters, went on the shopping tour Dec. 19, It was followed by a gift wrapping party where the youngsters were visited by Santa Claus. The children were referred to the Jaycees by the Public Welfare Division and the local school district. Each family was screened and the partici pants chosen on the basis o f need. Jack Schulze served as chairman o f the tour for the Jaycees. He is district super visor for the Property Tax Division of the Department of Revenue, and a member of Chapter 40. I haven't as yet. I think I'll leTthe first year go by; perhaps I'll decide to invest at a future date. I don't understand the stock market very well, So I decided to wait. I'm going to watch the progress of the fund to see what happens. JOSEPHINE COLBURN Secretary Yes, I decided to invest the maximum amount. I'm w ithin shouting distance o f retirement, and I feel the variable annuity program w ill improve retirement benefits as well as offset inflation. I also feel the people investing our money w ill not invest in anything that w ill really lose a lot of money.
