OSEA's program to select a State Employee of the Year fo r 1969. The certificates, signed by Gov. Tom McCall, OSEA Presi dent Jerry Liebertz and local chapter presidents, w ill be pre sented" to recipients later this month. The program was begun two years ago by OSEA's Public Relations Committee. George Katagiri, Putnam- Stephens Chapter 23, science An employee who com plained to OSEA that he did not get a fu ll month's pay in November has been paid an additional $75.48. Eugene A. Kidwell works for the printing division of the D e p a rtm e n t o f G eneral Services. He contacted staff member Jo h n M . Schoonover last month and said he was hired in November on an emergency appointment. Although he was told his salary would be $447 per month, his paycheck was only $371.52. Upon in v e s tig a t io n , S c h o o n o v e r learned that K id w e ll's personnel action listed his salary at $2.58 per hour. Membership in OSEA is not required to be nominated or selected for an award at any level. McCall Appoints OSEA Member Mercedes Deiz District Judge Gov. Tom McCall has ap- pointed the first woman judge in the history o f the district court in Oregon. She is Mercedes Frances Deiz, a member o f OSEA's Consolidated Chapter 61 in Portland. McCall appointed her to the Multnomah County District Court . position vacated last month by Judge Ray D. Shoemaker. He retired. Mrs. Deiz graduated from Northwestern College o f Law in 1960. From then until 1967 she was in private practice. MERCEDES DEIZ New District Judge Since 1967 she has been a hearings officer fo r the Work men's Compensation Board in Portland. State Police Group Vote No Affiliation d ra fte d a re s o lu tio n which said in part membership in either the Oregon State Employees Association or the American Federation o f state, C o u n ty and M u n ic ip a l Employees Union (A F L —CIO) is not necessary to resolve departmental problems. OSEA Gets Employee $ 7 5 Extra Salary Day and Chamberlain, state printer, agreed to change Kidwell's appointment from emergency to temporary and his rate o f pay from hourly to monthly. He also agreed to pay Kidwell for the tw o holidays. PERS Account Balances Due State employees w ill get statements listing the amount of money in their retirement a c co u n ts in about three months. They are being prepared by the Public Employees' Re tirement System in Portland. The agency said statements w ill be mailed in late March or e a rly A p r il. Each statement w ill list the to ta l am ount o f in te re st credited to the account o f the employee plus the contri butions made from the time he began to participate in the system. The rate of interest that has been accredited to his account during the 1969 calendar year w ill also be reflected in the statement. The statements w ill be mailed to state agencies. It is their responsiblity to see that th e y are d is trib u te d to employees.
