    Centennial Plans

W ith $1,750,000
According to many of Oregon’s Legisla
tors the State made a great investment in
its appropriation of nearly two million
dollars to the Centennial Commission.'; What\
is expected to be the country’s biggest
birthday party in the past decade was given
a much-needed shot in the arm early this
month when Governor Mark Hatfield
signed into law a bill authorizing the
Commission to spend this sum on a shop
ping campaign that is hoped to return the
amount many times over to the state.
Great plans are now well underway to
attract the nation’s populace, along with
industry, once again to the sites of Amer
ica’s “scenic wonderland” . Instead of an
arduous trek over plains and mountains in
covered wagons, which took the pioneers
months to travel, present-day travelers will
only be from a day or so to a few hours
away from the greatest, celebration the
Northwest has ever experienced.
Preparations for the huge affair are not
in the hands of just a few. Ted Hallock,
State coordinator for the Oregon Centennial
Commission, estimates that ^50,000 people
will volunteer for Centennial jobs by
March. Under the guidance of the Gover
nor’s 14-member State Advisory Committee,
each, county has named its own Centennial
( chairman; more than 95 communities have
elected city chairmen; approximately 3,000
Oregonians are working on specific proj-
ccts.
Make yourself indispensable and you’ll
move up; but, act as though you are in
dispensable and you’ll move out.
