These days most men don’t build
mansions or livesW large

the same may be said for the less for­
tunate men of the past. The cottage
was the common house, and very
simple the many styles are. For ?a

town of Canemah, just south of the

hill. There in a pocket, at stiver level,
are the homes of the men who served

house, with its pointed window in

have come around Cape Horn, and it
serves as an excellent example of the
character of préfabrication in the
days of the Gold Rush. At least one
of Oregon’s mansions was prefabri­
cated, the Holman house in Salem
which now serves as the Cottage
Home for the Aged on N. Cottage
street.
