Wage Problem
The following item is reprinted from
the Readers Corner, Portland Oregonian
issue of November 24, 1948. The edi
torial staff is pleased to have its mem
bers contribute in such fine fashion to
our campaign of telling the public what
our problems are and how we propose
to improve public service. The article
follows:
"To the Editor: Industry wants its
fourth round of wage increases. The
National Realty board plans to ask the
81st congress to remove rent controls
and to ask the federal government not
to begin its low-cost housing program.
Now ( picture if you will the financial
plight of one important segment of our
Oregon population, the 1OfpftO em
ployees of the stat£ .^
"Since the beginning of inflation,
Oregon employes have' received, a $20
cost-of-living increase, which is only
temporary until December 31, 1948,
moneys are forthcoming.
If the $20 is taken away, and if wages
are notBO^ted by atT eW ^ilfheW ; 10
plus the $20, state employes will be in
a tragic financial condition in view of
the continuing high cost of living.
"State employes are required to pass
